Tudor unveils new alarm watch at Baselworld 2011
Earlier today, Tudor (which is owned by Rolex), unveiled the new Tudor Advisor alarm watch. Mechanical alarm complications are arguably one of the most useful watch complications, aside from maybe a chronograph or GMT function, as you can set the alarm to remind you of something, or to wake you up at your hotel when traveling (I could use one right now in fact). Surprisingly, though, not many mechanical watch companies even have this complication in their arsenal, other than Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox and Vulcain Cricket. But now, Tudor can be added to that list.
The power reserve indicator is definitely a feature that sets the Advisor apart from the Memovox for example. However, being that Jaeger-LeCoultre's Memovox is the benchmark within mechanical alarm watches, it will be very hard to compete. The addition of the power reserve indicator is a nice touch, but I'm sure it is not enough to propel the Advisor above the venerable Memovox. The Memovox is just too iconic of a piece, from one of the most respected brands in watchmaking. If priced right the Tudor may be able to compete well, and the fact that it is essentially made by Rolex (the movement is customized by Tudor, whose parent company is Rolex, although it is not an in-house manufacture caliber). If it is priced too high, though, I am sure many buyers might a Memovox or Cricket at that point.
Tudor Press Release
The new Tudor Advisor is the latest addition to the Heritage collection, launched in 2010 and inspired by the brand's rich history. This blend of technical prowess and style is a re-interpretation of an iconic alarm watch dating from 1957. Its movement is equipped with an exclusive module that emits a clear, constant ring when the alarm goes off. While the middle retains its original proportions, the case has increased in diameter from 34mm to 42mm to reflect more contemporary tastes. A red centre hand points out the alarm time, a window at 3 o'clock indicates the alarm power reserve, and there is an On/Off window at 9 o'clock. This resolutely modern watch with its delicate balance of style and performance encapsulates all Tudor's retro-chic spirit.
