On October 21, 2011 at the age of 85, George Daniels, has passed away in his home on the Isle of Man (a self-governing British Crown Dependency). Daniels is best known for inventing the co-axial escapement which functions with virtually no lubrication thereby eliminating one of the biggest shortcomings of the traditional lever escapement.

Written by Daniels in 1981, Watchmaking is widely regarded as the reference book in horology and one of the best watchmaking books ever written. I'm currently half way through reading Watchmaking, and although I cannot say I know George Daniels, the book provides insight into one of the greatest watchmaking minds of our time. Based on the text, it is clear Daniels was a perfectionist. Every intricate detail of watchmaking is accurately described giving you a real sense of the immense challenges watchmakers face on a daily basis.

Elizabeth Doerr says, "Fans of Daniels will be pleased to know that a biography written by Michael Clerizo with the current working title "George Daniels: A Master Watchmaker and His Work" is due to be published next fall."

Our condolences go out to his family, friends and fans. RIP.
