Pre-SIHH: Ralph Lauren Sporting World Time

October 28, 2012

As a continuation to the RL Sporting World Time collection — which is currently only available in 18K white and rose gold — Ralph Lauren will unveil a new stainless steel version at SIHH 2013 in January.

The Sporting Word Time comes in a brushed steel case that measures 45 mm in diameter by 11.5 mm thick. It has the collection’s signature fixed bezel with 6 bezel screws and screw-in lugs. Like all of the Sporting collection, except for the Automotive model, the hours are marked by transferred Roman numerals. White transferred railroad-style minutes track. The dial is blue which matches the strap. The hours and minutes are indicated by silvery Breguet-style hands; seconds are displayed by the red baton central seconds hand. In the upper left section of the dial is the power reserve indicator, and in the upper right is date subdial — both features silvery sword-shaped hands.

The crown at 3 o’clock is in stainless steel with the RL logo. It controls the the time setting and winding. At 10 o’clock a second steel crown controls the the city disc, which consists of 24 time zones. At 2 o’clock is a small corrector button to adjust the date (requires a key). The 2nd time zone is displayed at 6 o’clock, along with the day/night indicator (located in the aperture at 9 o’clock within the 12-hour 2nd time zone subdial).

As with the entire Ralph Lauren lineup, the movement is sourced from the Richemont group’s stable of watch manufactures (Richemont owns the license to make Ralph Lauren watches). This particular movement, the RL 939, is based on the Jaeger-LeCoultre JL 939 caliber found in the Master Geographic. Just like the JL 939, it runs at 28,800 vph (4Hz), has 34 jewels and over 300 components. However, the RL movement has a slightly lower maximum power reserve of 40-hours, whereas the JL movement has a max of 43-hours. The main plate and bridges are finished with vertical Côtes de Genève and circular graining. The rotor has vertical Côtes de Genève and is signed “Ralph Lauren.”

Sapphire crystal caseback secured by 6 screws. Water-resistance 100 meters. Blue alligator leather strap, secured by screws, brushed stainless steel pin buckle. The price is $9,500.
