The new Jaeger-LeCoultre Geophysic "True Second" and "Universal Time" Hands-On

Jason Pitsch

Last night in New York City, at the Clocktower restaurant in the Edition hotel, Jaeger-LeCoultre debuted four new Geophysic models to a group of local watch journalists and collectors. The launch perfectly coincided with the start of the Watches & Wonders trade show, which runs from September 30th to October 3rd in Hong Kong. According to Philippe Bonay, the new Geophysic timepieces, which are powered by all new in-house movements, took four years to develop. To accommodate the new caliber 770 (True Second) and 772 (Universal Time) movements, the cases had to be enlarged to 39.6 mm and 41.6 mm, respectively, compared to the 38.5 mm diameter Tribute to Geophysic 1958 models that were launched just last year, that talked about HERE and HERE. The cases are also a bit thicker at 11.7 mm and 11.84 mm, versus 11.4 mm

Devon Works watches, a company that produces electronic wristwatches that use a system of belts to tell the time, has announced they are producing an officially licensed Star Wars watch using their patented system of telling the time. Leroy Chronometre Observatoire with aluminum case, dial and movement

Jason Pitsch

One of the most interesting of the 43 timepieces that have been donated for Only Watch 2015 which will go to support medical research for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, is an aluminum watch from Leroy. And by aluminum I mean the case, dial and movement are crafted from aluminum. The “Chronomètre Observatoire – Pièce unique Only Watch” is inspired by an aluminum travel clock with grande sonnerie dating from 1894 that is in the brand’s museum. The Leroy manufacture caliber L200AL is manually wound with 42-jewels and twin mainspring power barrels good for 98-hours. A circular 3-way balance bridge provides robust support to the screwed balance and direct impulse escapement system for increased accuracy. The main plate and bridges are frosted with beveled polished edges and blued screws with polished heads. (Ref. 288/1)

Jason Pitsch

At Baselworld this year Oris announced a partnership with the United States Marine Corps Force Reconnaissance, also known as Force Recon, one of the elite US Special Forces companies. According to Wikipedia, “FORECON is responsible for operating independently behind enemy lines performing unconventional special operations, in support of conventional warfare. The unit’s various methods of airborne, heliborne, submarine and waterborne insertions and extractions are similar to those of the Navy SEALs, Army Special Forces, 75th Ranger Regiment, or Air Force Combat Controllers, although Force Recon’s missions and tasks do differ slightly with a focus on primarily supporting Marine expeditionary and amphibious operations. Needless to say, Force Recon soldiers require a highly reliable timepiece that is light and can stand up to the rigorous conditions this elite unit encounters, often behind enemy lines.
