Originally introduced in November 2008, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore "Survivor" has an unmistakable design with its massive crown and pusher guards and all black color scheme. It comes in a 42 mm x 15.65 mm black titanium case, which is not huge, until you add the guards. The Survivor came at a time when big bold timepieces were in style; now 4 short years later, following a major global recession - smaller more reserved timepieces are the trend.

Longines-L2.768.4.53.2_3-4.jpg

At Baselworld 2012, Longines revealed the vintage inspired Heritage 1942 chronograph collection.

The 40 mm diameter circular steel case houses a self-winding column-wheel chronograph movement. Vintage style round pushers are consistent with timepieces from the 1940s. The lacquered dial, available in white or black, features 9 Arabic numerals, a railway-track minute ring and a tachometric scale around the rim of the dial (white markings on the black dial and black on the white dial). The white-dial version has blued steel hands; the black dial version has rhodium-plated hands.

Austrian watch company Habring², the same guys who made this foudryante and dead seconds timepiece, recently introduced a new split-seconds chronograph - the Habring² Doppel 2.0.

Twenty years ago, under the tutelage Günter Blümlein, Richard Habring played a major role in the development of a split-seconds complication, but instead of using a column-wheel based movement, his idea utilized a more affordable and easier to service cam and lever based design. The rear-mounted split-seconds wheel design was granted a patent (DE4209580A). The patent held by Habring's former employer IWC has now expired, and so Habring has produced a timepiece that utilizes the movement design under his own brand name.
