Introducing the record-setting Octo Finissimo Minute Repeater

Jason Pitsch

Bulgari introduced the world’s thinnest tourbillon wristwatch in 2014. Two years later, they have debuted another record-setting timepiece called the Octo Finissimo Minute Repeater, which is currently the thinnest minute repeater in the world. To achieve such a feat, with a minute-repeater no less, a tremendous amount of research and design was required as this type of complication is one of the most difficult to produce. And to fit a minute-repeater movement inside a 6.85 mm thick case was, of course, an incredible challenge for the watchmakers in Le Sentier. At 3.12 mm in thickness, the movement is thinner than two-quarters stacked on top of each other. Which again, we have to call out, considering this is a chiming watch. To achieve the desired level of sound quality, in such a small area, the use of titanium was required for

PHOTO REPORT: Bulgari Octo Finissimo collection

Italian jeweler and watchmaker, Bulgari, hosted a party at their two-level 5th Avenue boutique last Tuesday – to showcase their new ultra-thin “Octo Finissimo” timepieces. Bulgari’s head of watch design, Fabrizio Buonamassa, was on hand to explain the newest addition to the collection. Bulgari Octo Finissimo Buonamassa is pictured wearing the 5 mm thick Octo Finissimo wristwatch. He explained to PROFESSIONAL WATCHES, that the decision to position the small seconds display off-center, was to create a more attractive look that did not obstruct the Arabic numeral at 6 o’clock. He went on to describe how Buglari succeeded in producing such an incredibly thin mechanical timepiece. First, the movement designers had to create a caliber that is a mere 2.23 mm thick, which of course took years of research and development. Second, the case was specially fabricated with only two pieces

Introducing the Bulgari Diagono Ultranero Chronograph

Today, Bulgari unveiled the Diagono Ultranero Chronograph. The 42 mm timepiece comes in a steel case that has a DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) treatment which is black, and that protects against scratches. Four variations are available: neutral accents, red accents, yellow accents and 18K pink gold accents and with solid pink gold bezel. The Ultranero is powered by what Bulgari calls a “caliber B130,” that is presumably an ETA or Sellita. It beats at 4Hz and has a 42-hour power reserve. The hour and minute hands are sword-shaped and feature luminous treatment. The applied indexes also feature a luminous treatment, except the Arabic numeral at 12 o’clock. Functions include: hours, minutes, chronograph and date.
