Bulova moon watch sells for $1.3 million

According to Ben Clymer, of Hodinkee, the Bulova Apollo 15 Lunar Surface Chronograph we wrote about a few weeks back, sold yesterday for $1.3 million. We knew it would easily sell for the $50K starting price, but to see it sell for well over a million – $1.625 million including the buyer’s commission to be precise – is astonishing.

Worn: Bulova Apollo 15 Lunar Surface Chronograph

An absolutely epic Bulova chronograph is coming up for sale next week. From October 15th to the 22nd, you will be able to bid on a watch worn on the moon by Commander Dave Scott of Apollo 15. As stated in his 5-page letter of authenticity, Scott explained, “The primary use of the wrist chronograph on the surface of the Moon was to track…the elapsed time of consumables use (oxygen, water, and battery) in the Portable Life Support System (PLSS) backpack.” In the letter Scott went on to say, “Knowledge of precise time remaining was essential…as a backup to the standard issued Omega chronograph, I carried and used a Bulova chronograph on the lunar surface…this unique strap was…worn during…each of my three EVAs on the lunar surface.” Paying $50,000 or more for a Bulova watch may seem ridiculous, but, in

Bulova wristwatch with 24K gold case

Bulova has produced a new watch that features a 24-Karat gold case, sort of. “This is the first watch case made of 999.9 pure gold and uses a proprietary process developed by Bulova; several worldwide patents are pending,” according to Bulova. Although, it should be noted as shown by the exploded diagram below, part of the case uses materials which are not gold. The case, bezel and caseback are 24K gold, constructed in what Bulova refers to as a “unique capsule form” and anchored with grade-5 titanium components. This Swiss made 24K Gold Special Edition is the 1st Edition of Bulova’s timepieces designed as part of the select Joseph Bulova Collection.
