Ulysse Nardin Caprice Tiger in White Gold

Ulysse-Nardin-Caprice-White-Tiger.jpg

Caprice Tiger in White Gold.

A woman, like the tiger, possesses a mysterious poetry of strength, power and sensuality, emitting a presence that is both commanding and curious. Ulysse Nardin feeds her fantasies with the Caprice Tiger: a jewel of a timepiece worthy of a fierce fight.

The Caprice Tiger in 18-karat white gold transfixes those who cross its path. With eyes made of emeralds and a form glistening with diamonds, the tiger, although dreamlike, appears alive, as if it's moving stealthily through the grasses. It is a creature of wonder, as enchanting and mystifying as the woman whose wrist it adorns. A piece of jewelry that stands confidently in its own splendor, the Caprice Tiger illustrates the convergence of high horology and breathtaking aesthetic.

A. Favre & fils Phoenix 10.1: Quantième à Grand Affichage Rotatif

Phoenix101_RG_Front_LR-1.jpg

Laurent Favre, has re-launched a brand that, according to documents in the Neuchâtel State Archives, dates back to the early 1700s (beginning with his ancestor Abraham Favre). It is unclear when the name A. Favre & fils actually came into use, but the last Abraham Favre was known to have signed the brand name on timepieces he created. As a heritage to his forbears, Laurent Favre, a 10th generation watchmaker, has learned the art of fine watchmaking through his studies and experience working at a major Swiss watch brand.

He has made it to the point were he has the know-how required to create his own line of timepieces. The first timepiece introduced, under the resurrected A. Favre & fils name, is the Phoenix 10.1: Quantième à Grand Affichage Rotatif.

This new timepiece is both aesthetically and technically appealing. Aesthetically, the movement is intricately finished using numerous techniques including: chamfering, drawing, circular graining, sinks entirely by hand, and a "Rayons de la Gloire" (Rays of Glory) machine finish on bridges (also called sun ray). Technically, the hand wound movement runs at a high rate of 28,800 vph (this rate is unusually high for a manual wind movement). Parallel twin barrels offer up to 84 hours of power reserve (40 hours is common among single barrel mechanical movements). And the most important technical aspect, is a patented big date, which is displayed on the right third of the dial. The Quantième à Grand Affichage Rotatif was designed to optimize the number of parts, therefore increasing reliability, by reducing the number of moving parts to, only two.

Zenith El Primero Saga & Striking 10th

El Primero Striking 10th_rose gold_77.jpg

At Baselworld 2010, I had a chance to view the new Zenith El Primero Striking 10th timepiece, in gold. In recent years Zenith has gotten away from their core, which is more traditional timepieces. Under the direction of their new CEO, Jean-Frédéric Dufour, they are getting back to basics. And this, of course, includes their famous EL Primero movement. Below are some photos of the new El Primero collection, with the cool Striking 10th feature (shown in gold) and the new El Primero Sage (shown in stainless steel).

Blancpain Carrousel Sapphire

Blancpain-carrousel-sapphire-baselworld-2010.jpg

Introduced at Baselworld 2010, the Blancpain Carrousel Sapphire is quite an impressive timepiece. It features a rose gold case with a sapphire crystal on the front, back and on both sides of the case. It even features a sapphire crystal in place of the plates and dial, which creates the illusion that the movement is floating inside the case. It looks really cool in person. Another key feature, is the carrousel movement (a "carrousel" improves accuracy by negating gravity's effects, much like a tourbillon). A carrousel movement is very difficult to produce, and very rare. Accordingly, the price is what you would pay for a tourbillon, or more.

Chronoswiss Hand-Skeletonized & Engraved Timepieces

chronoswiss-skeleton-timepieces-baselworld-2010-3.jpg

These are two beautiful limited edition Chronoswiss Zeitzeichen Skeleton watches that I photographed through the case at the Chronswiss booth during the Baselworld 2010 show. I have recently featured a few other notable skeletonized watches, made by Benzinger and Armin Strom. All three brands make beautiful timepieces, all hand-engraved and hand-skeletonized, the only way to do a traditional skeleton timepiece. Jochen Benzinger, the watchmaker behind the Benzinger Boutique collection, recognized as one of the best hand engravers in the world, actually did the work on these two Chronoswiss masterpieces.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Memovox International

Jaeger-LeCoultre-Memovox-International-2.jpg

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Memovox International was introduced at SIHH 2010, in January. It is based on the Memovox Wortimer, which was introduced 1958. Jaeger-LeCoultre also introduced a new version of the original Memovox, which I actually prefer because its a more simple dial. Originally, the Memovox was powered by a 489 Calibre, then the 916 Calibre, both new models are powered by the new 956 Calibre. The new calibre features improvements over the original, such as; a variable-inertia balance, fast-date setting, and ceramic ball bearings. The Memovox International, like the watch it replaces, features an alarm disc with 24 cities listed. This allows you to not only set an audible alarm to go off, using the crown at 2 o'clock, it also allows you to read the time in any of the 24 time zones. This is a great classic model, and I am glad Jaeger-LeCoultre decided to revive this collection.

Grand Lange 1 Luminous

Lange-Grand-1.jpg

A. Lange & Söhne just announced the new Grand Lange 1 "Luminous". It is a version of their most popular model, the Lange 1, with luminous applied to the hands and markers. They introduced the Zeitwerk Luminous at SIHH 2010, which got a lot of buzz. And with the success of the Zeitwerk Luminous, it makes sense that they would offer their most popular timepiece with luminous markers and hands.
