At SIHH 2013 Montblanc will launch a new wandering hours (as opposed to jumping hours) chronograph, with a day/night indicator integrated into the hour display. The Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Rising Hours shows the hour via Arabic numeral cutouts which spin on a disc and are indicated by a red arrow over top. Below the cut-out is a disc that is half grey colored and half blue; throughout the day and night, the disc rotates at a varying rate using a special twin cam mechanism, to display day or night directly underneath the hour cut-outs.

SIHH 2012: Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph GMT

At the SIHH show last month, Montblanc introduced the Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph Open Hometime. A new addition to the Nicolas Rieussec collection that features an in-house column-wheel chronograph, like the model originally introduced in 2008, now with a GMT function.

The Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph collection pays homage to Nicolas Mathieu Rieussec, who invented the first chronograph. Rieussec's original 1821 chronograph invention was housed in a large wooden box, and it required ink to record elapsed times on an enameled disk which then needed to be cleaned in-between each measurement. The time writer was hardly practical, but it eventually led to the wristwatch chronographs we know today.

SIHH 2012: Mont Blanc TimeWriter II Bi-Frequence 1000

montblanc-TimeWriter-II-Bi-Frequence-1.jpg

Mont Blanc has just officially announced the TimeWriter II Chronograph Bi-Frequence 1000, a highly complicated chronograph capable of recording times with 1/1000th of a second precision.

The only other mechanical chronograph capable of recording times with this level of precision is the TAG Heuer Mikrotimer, which was introduced last year. However, the Mikrotimer "currently" has a power reserve of only 2.5 minutes. In comparison, the Bi-Freuquence has a much more useful reserve of 45-minutes. Plus, Bi-Frequence's chronograph display can be read instantly, without requiring complex complications. And most importantly, Mont Blanc's super chronograph is a production ready, whereas the TAG is a concept-only model at this point in time.

Ahead of SIHH 2011, which starts in a few weeks, Montblanc has just released images of the Villeret 1858 Vintage Pulsographe, a chronograph that features a pulse scale for calculating pulse rates. This is an in-house chronograph, manufactured at the the Montblanc's Villeret manufacture (formerly Minerva). Calibre MBM 13.21v is hand wound and runs at 18,000 (or 2.5Hz), with a 60-hour power reserve. The movement has been extensively hand finished (which you can read about in detail in the full press release below). The chronograph is a monopusher (one button activates the start, stop and reset functions, as opposed to the standard two button configuration), and features a smooth column-wheel with horizontal coupling. The case is 39 mm x 12.3 mm, which is a perfect size considering that this is a vintage inspired watch.
