TAG Heuer Baselworld Teaser

TAG-Heuer-Pendulum.jpg TAG Heuer Grand Carrera Pendulum introduced in 2010

Yesterday, we sat down with TAG Heuer SA Vice President Guy Sémon, to discuss the brand’s high tech watchmaking efforts. Specifically, we discussed the brand’s highly complicated dual architecture timepieces: the Mikrograph, the Mikrotimer, the Mikrogirder and the Mikrotourbillon S.

These cutting-edge ultra-high frequency timepieces act as a halo for the brand, they show off the technical prowess of TAG Heuer. But, Sémon was careful to mention that all of these efforts — although important for their image — are ultimately designed with the goal of being used in regular timepieces. With the idea that accuracy (or chronometry - the advancement of watchmaking) is what is most important. If you haven’t yet seen what a 5/10,000th of second chronograph hands looks like as it sweeps around the dial 20 times per second, then you should definitely watch this video of the Mikrogirder that was shot last year at Baselworld. The watch is mechanical, yet it operates at a speed that is almost unfathomable, and it sounds like an electronic motor.

Hot on the heels of last year’s winning Jack Heuer 80th Birthday Carrera comes this new special edition from TAG Heuer, announced just a few days ago. Like last year’s model, this limited edition Carrera celebrates a milestone - but in this case, not Mr. Heuer’s birthday — but it’s the birthday of the Carrera model itself, which is 50 years old as of 2013.

FOUND: Heuer 1550 sg Bundeswehr Chronograph

8242129920_8a409abce2_b.jpg

When speaking of military watches, nothing is iconic as the Heuer 1550 sg Chronograph, issued to the German Bundeswehr (as well as other European and Scandinavian militaries) in the 1970s. The 1550 sg - or “Bundeswehr/Bund” as they are more commonly known, is a large piece, measuring in at nearly 43mm diameter - a monster for the time. Featuring a manual winding Valjoux 230 Flyback chronograph movement and a rotating bezel, the Bund was particularly popular with military aviators.

The example we have found here is an early piece featuring “3H” and “T” markings on the dial, as well as a Bundeswehr Serial stamp on the case back, confirming its military issue. It is in excellent shape overall and is available for purchase online through analog/shift.

This is a seriously cool bit of Heuer kit for the military watch enthusiast or vintage timepiece collector in general.

FOUND: Heuer Super Autavia Dashboard Chronograph

Heuer-Super-Autavia-4.jpg

Introduced in 1958, the Heuer Super Autavia was the first dashboard chronograph for motorized vehicles such as planes, boats and automobiles. The one we found (pictured) is a B Series Super Autavia Dashboard Chronograph, which would have been produced from 1959-1967. It has a 17-jewel manual wind column-wheel chronograph movement in immaculate condition. The hands, dial and bezel appear to be in original condition. And based on the video included with the listing, everything seems to be in very good working condition. If you've want it, the eBay "Buy It Now" price is $4,500, with an option to "Make an Offer."
