Bovet Pininfarnia Ottanta Tourbillon 4-in-1 watch

BOVET-PININFARINA-OTTANTA-Tourbillon-22.jpg

Bovet recently introduced the Pininfarnia Ottanta Tourbillon. At first glance, it appears that it is designed to be worn on your wrist like a traditional wristwatch, and it is. But it can also be flipped around, like a Reverso, allowing you to display either the caseback or dial side. That's not it, though, it can also convert into a pocket watch. And if that is not enough, it even converts into a miniature clock. So, essentially, you get four watches for the one price. However, for the price, you can easily buy two wristwatches, a pocket watch and a miniature table clock. In fact, at around $300K, you could buy many watches, and still have money left over.

Rafael Nadal wins French Open while wearing Richard Mille watch

Pro tennis player, Rafael Nadal, just won his fifth French Open in six years, and he did so in dominant fashion. The 24-year old has also regained the world No. 1 ranking, supplanting Roger Federer. This win, is also a win for watchmaker Richard Mille. As you can see from the photo, Nadal is wearing a black wristwatch. He actually wears this timepiece during his matches. It is unobtrusive and does not interfere with his game, clearly, as he has just won his first major since he signed on as a Richard Mille ambassador. The watch he wears during all of his tournaments is not your average sports watch either, it costs over half of a million dollars. And was custom built with input from Nadal. It is extremely light, and has shock absorbers, which prevent damage to the delicate tourbillon movement. Read the NYTimes.com article about Rafael Nadal's win.

Corum Black Ti-Bridge Tourbillon

Corum-Ti-Bridge-basle-2010.jpg

Corum unveiled a new version of their popular Ti-Bridge watch at Baselworld this year, the Ti-Bridge Tourbillon. Available in both titanium and in titanium treated with black PVD, this new timepiece features a tourbillon, that until recently, would have meant the watch would cost $100,000 plus. This is not true in todays economy, as numerous watch brands now offer tourbillons in the $50,000 range. Zenith, Alpina and Frederique Constant, to name a few. I had a chance to see the the black version of the new Ti-Bridge up close in Basel. It was definitely my favorite novelty from Corum for 2010. It is limited to 66 pieces worldwide and costs $55,000.

Baselworld 2010: Breguet Tradition Fusee Tourbillon w/Silicon Balance Spring

breguet-tradition-fussee.jpeg

At Baselworld 2010, which starts March 18th, Breguet will introduce a new Bregeut Tradition Fusee Tourbillon with a Breguet overcoil in silicon. Very few watchmakers currently have a Fusee Chain transmission in their répertoire. In fact, the only other company I can think of, is A. Lange & Sohne, with their Pour le Mérite. But for Breguet, the inventor of the tourbillon, an ultra complicated Fusee-and-chain transmission was not enough. So, the watchmakers at Breguet added a tourbillon and Breguet's new silicon balance spring.
