Twelve Faces of Time Horological Virtuosos
February 25, 2011
In 2010, writer Elizabeth Doerr and photographer Ralf Baumgarten released a large format photography book called "Twelve Faces of Time Horological Virtuosos." The book consists of a narrative about 12 different independent watchmakers, including a number of direct quotes from each master, complimented by beautiful black and white photography.
It is really enjoyable to read and learn about each of these distinct watchmaking personalities; including their opinions, creations and contributions to the world of horology. The "Twelve Faces of Time," are: Philippe Dufour, Paul Gerber, Dr. Ludwig Oechslin, Francois-Paul Journe, Knji Shiohara, Kari Voutilainen, Vianney Halter, Bet Haldimann, Volker Vyskocil, Thomas Prescher, Roger Smith and Felix Baumgartner.
Each of the twelve watchmakers has their own unique styles and philosophies towards life and watchmaking. This is, of course, reflected in their unique horological creations, whether is contemporary pieces from URWERK, or a classical pieces by Philippe DuFour. It is interesting to read about the different environments that each watchmaker works in, FP Journe, for example, works at his manufacture in the center of Geneva, whereas Volker Vyskocil works out of his apartment in Nettetal, Germany.
Superb writing and photography give you an intriguing view into each of these watchmaker's lives. If you are a fan of independent watchmaking, or just watchmaking in general, this is a must read.
