Speake-Marin Collection - Baselworld 2011

Peter Speake-Marin is a skilled watchmaking who has worked for some of the top brands in watchmaking, including the complicated watch manufacture Renaud & Papi. He has also collaborated with Harry Winston, MB&F and Maitres du Temps. A few years ago, he began designing timepieces under his own brand - "Speake-Marin." Like the watches he made for clients in the past, all of his timepieces are expertly hand finished to the highest standards and are available only in very limited quantities. The main watch introduction by Peter Speake-Marin at Baselworld 2011 was the Marin 2 "Thalassa." The Marin 2 features the exclusive SM2 movement, with its beautifully hand-finished components. The polished white gold case looks great with the blued steel outer dial and the German silver bridges which are visible through the opening in the center of the dial.

Vintage 1950s Heuer "Pre-Carrera" Chronograph

I recently came across a great looking Heuer chronograph, specifically a 1950s "Pre-Carrera" Heuer Chronograph. Unlike the original 1964 Carrera model, which is powered by a Valjoux 72, or the 1964 re-edition that came out in the late 1990s, which is powered by a Lemania, this watch (pictured) is powered by the manually wound Valjoux 71 movement.

MB&F HM3 ReBel Baselworld 2011

At Baselworld 2011, MB&F's main introduction was the MB&F HM3 ReBel, an 18-piece limited edition version of the HM3 Sidewinder. The ReBel is made to be worn on your right wrist, which is not the correct wrist that most of us should wear our wristwatch on (it is the norm to wear a watch on the opposite wrist from the one you write with), hence the name "ReBel." The second image (above) is a gold version of the HM3, the design is a mirror image of the ReBel. The HM3 ReBel has a PVD-treated 18K white gold case. The movement is the same as the original HM3, aside from the charcoal colored plates and bridges, which are new on the ReBel. The rotor features MB&F's signature battle axe design and is made of 22K gold. The retail price is $84,000.

Christophe Claret Blackjack 21 - Baselworld 2011

One of the most innovative haute horology pieces introduced this year at Baselworld was the Christophe Claret Blackjack 21. It comes in a titanium, white gold or pink gold case and has a 40-jewel automatic winding movement that runs at 4Hz and has a 72-hour power reserve. Functions include hour and minutes, as well as three highly addictive casino games built-in. The first game, Blackjack, takes place on the dial and is controlled via pushers. The cards shuffle behind the transparent smoked dial and appear through apertures when cards are dealt. The second game, dice, is on the side of the case in a clear compartment that has mini dice, allowing you to basically shake the watch and play dice on your wrist. The third game is roulette, just flip the watch over and the rotor acts as a working

Chopard L.U.C. XP Urushi - Baselworld 2011

One of the most unique Chopard L.U.C. timepieces to be introduced this year was the XP Urushi collection. Kiichiro Masumura, a Japanese artist, considered to be a "Living National Treasure" by his country, has supervised the creation of nine unique dials based on Urushi techniques. Urushi is the ancestral Japanese art of lacquering. The varnish is made from the sap of the Urushi tree (lacquer tree), a tree which is mostly found in Japan or China. The harvesting of the resin, somewhat like the rubber from the hevea Brasiliensis or "rubber tree", can only be done once a year and in very small quantities.

Corum Admiral's Cup Challenge 44 Chronograph Rubber

One of the brightest timepieces from the Baselworld 2011 show was the Corum Admiral's Cup Challenge 44 Chronograph Rubber Limited Edition. It is available in red, white and blue (100 pieces per color), the red stood out the most, though. It comes with a CO753 movement, which is a self-winding chronograph movement that is COSC certified. The case is rubber coated stainless steel and measures 44 mm in diameter. The crown and guards are made of vulcanized rubber. The strap is made of matching rubber and is integrated directly into the case. The retail price is $8,150.

New Technomarine UF6 Magnum collection - Baselworld 2011

Beginning a few years ago, Swiss watch brand, Technomarine, initiated a much needed brand revitalization strategy. The results, are just now starting to materialize, in the form of more appealing watch designs. The new men's UF6 Magnum collection exemplifies this best. First to be unveiled was the UF6 Magnum Small Seconds, which was previewed ahead of Baselworld 2011. Then, at Basel Technomarine introduced the entire UF6 Magnum collection, including the chronographs (shown above) and the GMT (shown below). Overall, the new designs are very appealing and I look forward to what new models the company produces going forward. Retail $1,200-$2,950 Source: Technomarine

Paul Walker and Dwanye Johnson wearing Richemont timepieces in 'Fast Five'

Paul Walker and Vin Disel Paul Walker and Dwanye Johnson are seen wearing Richemont Group watches in the new movie installment of Fast & Furious: Fast Five. Paul Walker is seen in two separate photos wearing a Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Compressor Diving Automatic Navy Seals timepiece on opposite wrists. One picture shows it on his right wrist, and the other picture shows it on his left wrist. I've read there are certain points in the movie where it is visible close-up, then in the same scene it not even visible on his wrist when the camera is zoomed out. Dwanye Johnson is seen in the image (below) wearing a Panerai wristwatch.
