Very Rare Rolex Submariner White Dial Ref. 6536
June 18, 2011
The first image above is a very rare Rolex Submariner Ref. 6536 White Dial (Mercedes hands, waterproof rating printed on dial, Circa 1955-1958). I cannot verify the value, or if one if available for sale, but I've read that there may only be two of this particular variation that are known to still exist, making it highly collectible.
I also found a similar white dial Submariner Ref/ 6536/1 (no waterproof rating printed on dial, Mercedes hands, Circa 1955) which sold at auction in 2002 for approximately $23,000.
Description of the Rolex Submariner Ref. 6536/1 White Dial from Antiquorum's online catalog from 4/13/2002:
"Rolex Oyster Perpetual "Submariner" with white dial, Ref. 6536/1. Second version, produced in 1955. Fine, and extremely rare center-seconds, self-winding, stainless steel, water-resistant, gentleman's wristwatch, with black bezel.
C. three-body, polished and brushed, screwed-down case back and crown, graduated revolving bezel in Arabic numerals for the decompression times. D. white with radium-coated bâton, triangular and dot indexes. "Skeleton" radium-coated hands. M. Cal. 1030, rhodium-plated, 25 jewels, straight line lever escapement, monometallic balance adjusted to temperatures and 5 positions, shock-absorber, self-compensating Breguet balance-spring. This watch is the second version of the "Submariner" watch without any indication of the watertightness and did not yet bear the crown-guard case. The first version was launched in 1953 and did not bear either the crown-guard case, did not indicate the waterproof depth and did not bear the Mercedes hands."
