Three New Habring² Central Minute Counter Chronographs

November 8, 2012

Chrono ZM 42 mm (double pusher with central minutes)

Austrian watchmaker Habring², has just announced three new central minute counter chronographs. Unlike the configuration seen on the vast majority of chronographs — where the minutes are counted on a small subdial — the Habring Central Minute Chronos count the minutes via a central hand that utilizes the entire dial to indicate the elapsed time. The advantage being that the minutes are much easier to read at a glance. It is not surprising that the same brand who makes affordable timepieces such as a full-time foudroyante (with dead second), a crown operated chronograph and a split-seconds chronograph — produced this.

The three versions have the same significantly modified Valjoux 7750 movements, each outfitted with a different way of actuating the chronograph start/stop/reset functions. The Chrono ZM - 42mm (uses the standard dual pusher configuration), the ZM - 36mm (uses a single pusher or monopusher) and the COS ZM - 42 mm (uses the brand’s proprietary crown system called COS).

It is important to note that, “Although the company’s own calibre A08MCOSZM is based on the wheel train of the ETA 7750, they share nothing in common bar their noted reliability and ease of service. Chronograph control via the crown and the central minute counter are both developments that are exclusive to Habring².”

Functions include hours, minutes, small running seconds hand, chronograph with stop-seconds hand and 60-minute counter from the center. Manual winding or automatic winding on request (only 42mm - models). Triovis fine adjustment. Shock-proof in accordance with DIN and NIHS 17 rubies, 48 hours of power reserve when fully wound.

The Chrono ZM and ZM come in stainless steel, and the COS ZM comes in titanium. Each case comes in 3 screwed sections. Concave sapphire crystal, non-reflective coating on both sides. Double-sealed crown, sapphire crystal back. Water-resistance to 50 meters. Engraved selective serial number 01 - 2012 to 12 - 2012 between the lugs at 6 o’clock. (Several dial/hands-combinations available by request.)

Habring², is a very small production boutique brand, based in a country not known for watchmaking (Austria) — but that does not seem to stop them from consistently making some really cool and innovative timepieces. (Check out this video of the full-time “foudroyante” produced by Habring.)
