Baselworld 2017: Seiko Presage Enamel collection

This is a quick hands-on look at Seiko’s new Presage Enamel collection that was previewed before Baselworld. Three of the four references in the collection are under $1500, with the chronograph coming in under $3000. As you can see in the picture below, the movement is not finished to crazy high Swiss standards, but it is reliable, made in-house, and you will never get an oven-baked enamel dial like this on a Swiss made timepiece for anywhere near this price point. You can read the full details, including the prices, in the article that we published last month.

Baselworld 2017: Zenith Elite Chronograph Classic

Jason Pitsch

In 2015, Zenith debuted the all-new El Primero Chronograph Classic, which was basically the chronograph version of the Elite 6150, also launched in 2015. This year, at Baselworld 2017, Zenith has – somewhat quietly – debuted a renamed version that is now called the Elite Chronograph Classic, at a starting price a full $2200 less than the original version from 2015! Additionally, the watch is now available with a gray or brown smoked dial. The watch measures 42 mm x 11.80 mm and features leaf-shaped rhodium-plated or gold-plated hands, depending if you get the steel or rose gold version. And one of my favorite design details that were also retained from the 2015 model is the engraved hour markers, either rhodium or gold plated, depending on the case material. Inside, is the El Primero column-wheel and horizontal clutch (not vertical)

Baselworld 2017: NOMOS Glashutte Club Campus

Jason Pitsch

This year, the German watchmaker, NOMOS Glashütte, announced a new collection targeted at consumers looking for a high-quality mechanical timepiece as a gift for graduation or an important achievement – named the Club Campus. The collection consists of two 38.5 mm models and one 36 mm version. All three timepieces come in a stainless steel case with a curved sapphire crystal and a solid screwed stainless steel back, powered by the in-house manufactured, manually wound Alpha movement. By design, the caseback is solid, so it can be engraved with a special message, which is available free of charge. Uniquely, the dials feature a combination of Roman and Arabic numerals. Thanks to a coating of blue luminescent material, the timepieces are also easily legible in the dark. All three models feature the familiar, extra-robust NOMOS Club case from stainless steel with

Baselworld 2017: Casio G-Shock MR-G “Aka-Zonae”

Jason Pitsch

This week at Baselworld 2017, Casio announced a very special version of their high-end titanium cased MR-G collection, which is clad with a unique deep crimson red color that pays homage to an elite warrior unit that was part of a feudal clan during Japan’s medieval Sengoku “Warring States” period. The red color was adapted from traditional Japanese armor, known as “aka-zonae” (or red-colored armor), which symbolized strength and unity. The G-Shock MR-G “Aka-Zonae” comes in a black PVD plated pure titanium case, that according to Casio, is exceptionally scratch resistant thanks to a process where the titanium is heated in a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen gas used to a 20-30µm hard layer on the material’s outer surface. Further, as part of a dual-layer hardening processing, after the titanium is hardened, DLC (diamond-like carbon) coating is applied to the

Armin Strom Online Watch Configurator

Jason Pitsch

Based in Biel/Bienne, which is home to companies such as Rolex, ETA, and Omega – Armin Strom is an independent watchmaker, and a true watch manufacture, with the ability to produce calibers fully in-house, and has already been offering customized features by special request for a long time. Over the years they have gotten very proficient at the process, and today, they are debuting a new interactive online personalization service called the “Watch Configurator,” which is similar to the customization options [TAG Heuer launched earlier this month] (https://professionalwatches.com/2017/03/hands-on-with-the-tag-heuer-connected-modular-45.html) with their Connected watch. However, these are purely mechanical watches, not smartwatches. Using the online Watch Configurator, you can select from multiple options, in real-time, such as movement/watch type, which can be a hand-wound, skeleton, tourbillon – basically anything from the Armin Strom. From there you can then choose different colors for

Baselworld 2017: Tudor Black Bay Steel

Jason Pitsch

The Heritage Black Bay is Tudor’s best selling watch collection – which is a modern re-interpretation of the Tudor Submariner – based on a combination the company’s dive watch references from the 1950s and 1970s. Beginning in 2012, with the original Black Bay Heritage Ref. 7930R, which features a Red bezel, Tudor has continually rolled out new editions, including the Black Bay Blue, Black, Dark, and Bronze editions. Today, that tradition continues with the launch of the Black Bay Steel, which comes with a circular satin-brushed matte stainless steel uni-directional rotating bezel inside the same 41 mm diameter case that is seen on existing models, with the exception of the Black Bay Bronze which has a larger case. In conjunction with the launch last year of the Black Bay Dark and Bronze, Tudor announced that all Black Bays will be
