Alpina has brought back it’s regulator watch — which they last offered for sale in 2003.

The Alpiner Regulator Automatic looks not much like its predecessor, as the entire aesthetic of Alpina has changed over the years since Frederique Constant SA bought the company (2003), but what’s the same is the regulator layout which has a distinctly separate display for hours, minutes, and small seconds.

Overlapping hands, stacked in the center of a watch, are the most traditional layout used for wristwatches, but regulator style layouts have been used historically as railroad watches, which are said to be easier to read due to each segment of time being shown separately. This type of watch has also been used at watch factories as a reference, similar to an Observatory Chronometer which before quartz was used as a reference for the other clocks and watches in a scientific Observatory.

The Alpina Regulator Automatic comes in a 45 mm stainless steel case and is equipped with a caliber AL-650 automatic movement. It’s in the blue/white dial (as shown), blue/red/white, and black/white dial configurations, with either a thick leather strap or stainless steel bracelet.

Retail is $1,895 on a leather strap and $1,995 on a stainless steel bracelet.
