Citizen recently debuted a limited edition Eco-Drive dive watch based on the design of their 1982 Professional Diver, with a dial inspired by the endangered whale shark.

A dark blue dial and bezel, and a spot pattern on the dial, distinguish this model — particularly the spots which mimic the back of a whale shark. The whale shark — a slow-moving, filter-feeding carpet shark — is typically found in plankton-rich, temperate waters near the equator and is known as the largest living nonmammalian vertebrate.

As cliche as the dark blue ocean references are in the watch industry, it’s good to know that a portion of the proceeds will go toward supporting the marine conservation activities of Conservation International. The price of this watch has not been provided by Citizen, because it will not be released until Fall 2022. We estimate the watch will retail for approximately $500 and 10% will go to the activities of Conservation International.

Presented in a blackened titanium case measuring 45.8 mm x 14.3 mm, with a DLC bezel, the case design harkens back to the company’s 1982 Professional Diver, which at the time, achieved the highest depth rating, at 1,300 meters. With four prominent bezel guards, large notches on the bezel (which aid in rotating the bezel), and a lugless construction, the aesthetic is unmistakably Citizen.

The case has a sandblasted matte black Duratec DLC finish that resists scratches, and a screw-in titanium caseback is embossed with a whale shark silhouette. The dive watch is ISO 6425 compliant, which is achieved thanks to the depth rating of 200 meters, and the luminescent, highly legible dial and bezel.

Being an Eco-Drive quartz movement, the solar-powered caliber E186 does not require regular battery replacement and can run for 6-months on a full light-powered charge. Accuracy is rated to -15/+15 seconds per month. The Citizen Promaster Eco-Drive Diver Limited Edition (Ref. BN0225-04L) is expected to be available later this year in a limited edition of 5,000 pieces.
