A spring-loaded device used to protect the balance wheel jewel bearings, that support the balance system, by diverting shocks away from the fragile balance pivot to the sturdier parts of the balance staff. The spring allows the balance wheel to return to its original position after receiving shock force. The most common brand name of mechanical watch shock absorber is “Incabloc.”
