Last year, Hamilton came out with a limited edition white-on-black retro-inspired Intra-Matic chronograph that measures 42 mm in diameter, a move towards recreating the popular Chrono-Matic (aka Caliber 11) from their archive.

This year, Hamilton has one-upped that limited version with a regular production model that measures a smaller 40 mm in diameter (as we asked for in our article last year), and with a true black-on-white “Panda” dial as well.

Typically, even when writers or consumers place our suggestions in the metaphorical “suggestion box” they’re ignored. Many watch brands are set in their ways and will not change due to customer feedback. This has long been a problem in the watch industry – in my opinion – and is something savvy brands are finally addressing. Kudos to Hamilton for actually listening. This means a lot, and frankly, many watches they are releasing lately are much more appealing to me, and in general, make me feel like the brand wants to bring back the classic American nostalgia and appeal it once had, after years of crazy designs that could have been done by any number of lesser brands.

Enter the Intra-Matic Automatic Chronograph which will be available at Hamilton online starting October 2018, and at authorized retailers the following month.

As mentioned above, the dial is white with black counters. The left is for small seconds and the right is a 30-minute chronograph counter. There is also a symmetrically placed date aperture at 6 o’clock. The hour and minute hands are nickeled and feature luminescent material. The hour indices are also in nickel, with lume, and have a faceted design. The outermost ring is a tachymeter and the middle shows minute/second graduations, printed in black. The chronograph’s seconds hand is black lacquered and the subdial hands have a white lacquer.
