This week, Hamilton launched a 38 mm version of the Pilot Pioneer Automatic, exclusively at the Hodinkee shop.

Inspired by Hamilton’s Model 23 pocket watch from the 1940s, the watch will be available at other authorized dealers after a period of global exclusivity on Hodinkee, which benefits the two companies in that it acts as a free advertisement, perhaps at the expense of smaller Hamilton watch dealers.

Nevertheless, the watch features a 38 mm stainless steel case, a black knock-down textured dial sans date, with artificially patinated lume on the stamped Arabic numerals, and the oversized poire squelette (pear skeleton/Cathedral) hour and minute hands. The railroad/minute chapter ring, logo, and other markings have been printed in matching, non-luminous paint. The bi-directional rotating has a black aluminum insert and the same patinated coloring as is used for the dial.

A sapphire crystal protects the dial, the crown flared for better grip although it’s a push-in type, and the caseback features an opening to view the H-10 movement which is an ETA 2801-2 modified for Hamilton. Driving the hours, minutes, and center seconds, the automatic movement can run autonomously for up to 80-hours.

The Khaki Pilot Pioneer Automatic 38 mm is rated water-resistant to 100 meters and is paired with a brown leather strap, with two-stitch contrasting thread, and a steel pin buckle that’s 18 mm at the lugs. (Ref. H76205530) The retail price is $995.
