Cult-favorite independent watchmaker, Urwerk, released a new 22-piece limited edition T-Rex timepiece today that combines materials and design elements from a variety of the company’s collections.

The Urwerk UR-100V “T-Rex” is the latest from the UR-100 line and features the texturized “T-Rex” material first seen on the UR-105 T-Rex in 2016. The top of the case (or bezel) material — made from a dark bronze alloy —  was previously used for the UR-105 CT Maverick Bronze. While the dial, case dimensions, and movement are the same as the UR-100 GunmetalUR-100 Spacetime, and other UR-100 wristwatches.

Urwerk UR-100V T-Rex

Like past UR-100 timepieces, this limited edition is presented in a 41 mm x 49.7 mm. x 14 mm case, except instead of the usual materials this is made from solid bronze, which has undergone three treatments. The first creates the bronze patina. Then a computer-controlled CNC milling machine carves the pattern of scales in the top and sides of the case. Last, The final process is a sand-blasting application that combines with Urwerk’s proprietary method of biochemical burnishing to give the watch its distinctive dark bronze color.

Inside, Urwerk’s 4Hz 40-jewels automatic caliber UR 12.02 drives the satellite wandering hours complication which consists of three aluminum satellites, each showing four hours, that rotate on a three-armed carousel. In turn, each satellite, displaying the hour, appears to carry a red pointer along a 60-minute scale.

“In the scale at 9 o’clock on the case, the pointer shows the 555.5 km traveled by a point on the equator in a period of 20 minutes. The 20-minute scale on the other side of the dial shows the 35,742 km that the Earth travels in its orbit around the sun in that time.”

A rotor, that Urwekrk refers to as a planetary gear, coupled to a Windfänger, winds the mainspring of the watch, without overwinding beyond the 48-hours (full wind), or creating excess wear. Urwerk’s UR-100V T-Rex component finishing techniques include circular graining, sanding, shot peening, spotting, and chamfering of the screw heads.
