Last week, MB&F released a new Legacy Machine, the LM101, similar to their Legacy One and Two, but in a much more wearable 40 mm case. In fact, this is their most conservatively sized and wearable timepiece ever. It also has the lowest price of any MB&F timepiece, but let’s not get carried away — calling any $59,000 timepiece “affordable” would be ludicrous.

The Legacy Machine LM101 features a large, free-sprung balance wheel, floating over the center of the dial. This exposed design offers a perfect view of the balance wheel as it oscillates back and fourth — 18,000 times per hour — mesmerizing the wearer and any onlookers in the process.

The time is indicated on the white off-center dial at 11 o’clock, and the power reserve (0-45 hours) is indicated on the white dial at 6 o’clock. The 2.5Hz movement is hand wound, and consists of 229 components, 23 of which are jewels. It features polished countersinks, gold chatons and is hand-finished with Geneva stripes and polished bevels (including internal angles).

The case measures 40 mm by 16 mm and comes in 18K white or red gold (5N). The sapphire crystal is highly domed to accommodate the suspended balance wheel and escapement, which also give the watch its distinctive look, like its predecessors: the Legacy Machine One and Two.

The Legacy Machine LM101 is paired with either a black or brown hand-stitched alligator leather strap with matching gold pin buckle. Limited to 30 pieces each in red or white gold.
