Parmigiani Fleurier announced a new timepiece today that features both a retrograde annual calendar and a precision moon phase.

The Tonda Annual Calendar automatically adjusts for months with 30 or 31 days, but needs to be manually adjusted once in February for 3 out of every 4 years that have 28 days, as it is calibrated to 29 days (leap year). You have to move up to a more expensive perpetual calendar in order to have a calendar that sets itself every month of the year.

In addition, there is a precision moonphase that only needs to be corrected every 122 years. This requires a compensation for the difference between a classic lunar cycle (29 days and 12 hours) and the actual lunar cycle (29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 2.8 seconds)

It’s worth noting that the Tonda Annual Calendar shows two representations of the moon – as viewed from both the northern and southern hemispheres. The moon counter and the solid rose gold moon discs stand out against aventurine glass that represents the sky.

This 4Hz automatic movement is based on PF331, with the addition of a module for the retrograde annual calendar and precision moon phase functions. Caliber PF339 features 359 components, 32 jewels, and measures 27.1 mm x 5.5 mm. The movement is powered by two series-coupled barrels good for a power reserve of 50-hours.

With Parmigiani Fleurier, you can expect everything finished to a very high level and this is no exception. The movement bridges are hand beveled and have Geneva stripes decoration. The oscillating weight is solid rose gold adorned with a guilloché barley grain motif.
