French watchmaker Yema and Brooklyn-based watch retailer Worn & Wound announced a new variation of the brand’s iconic Superman watch today.
The Yema x Worn & Wound Superman Maxi Dial Limited Edition features the classic 39 mm diameter case (there are also larger 41 mm Superman cases available in the standard collection) that measures 48 mm lug-to-lug, 13 mm thick, and with the signature oversized crown and crown guards. The case is completely brushed, maintaining the tool aesthetic with no frivolous polishing. As with the original 1963 model, this watch has the company’s proprietary locking bezel.
Yema’s Superman II — which most notably features oversized hour markers — served as inspiration for this limited edition “Maxi” dial watch. Worn & Wound’s designer chose to further modify the dial with a two-tone color scheme which uses a dark gray hue in the center area, with a subtly darker black hue around the perimeter. Punctuating the new dial design is a white printed cross-hair motif. As is often the way with collaborative limited editions, the date was removed, making the dial, despite having the Maxi effect, look uncluttered.
Protected by a domed sapphire crystal on the front, a solid screw-in caseback, a screw-down crown, and offering 300 meters of water-resistance — you would think the bezel would have 0-60 markings but instead, it has a 12-hour bezel, which is presumably a quirky differentiation that Worn & Wound chose during the design process.
Powering the Superman Maxi Dial LE is the Yema caliber YEMA2000, which was designed and developed in-house just over the Swiss border, in France. The 4Hz automatic movement has 29 jewels, hacking seconds, and a 42-hour power reserve. The movement has been regulated in four positions to an accuracy of -10/+10 seconds per day. The ball-bearing oscillating weight is finished with Geneva stripes. Uniquely, the bridges, not just the mainplate, have a perlage decoration applied.
Securing the watch to your wrist is a heavily tapered, brushed 3-link stainless steel bracelet that measures 19 mm where it connects to the case. The YEMA x Worn & Wound Superman Maxi Dial LE is limited to 300 pieces and is for sale at the Windupwatchshop.
