Danish brand (and silversmithy), Georg Jensen, produces lifestyle products ranging from watches to jewelry to home products. Their first timepiece, the Vivianna Bangle watch, was launched in 1969 and used a Chopard movement. In 1977, they introduced their first men’s watch, the Koppel, which was named for the artist who designed it, Henning Koppel.
We showed you one of the Koppel models with a cool hammered silver dial HERE in 2013. And now, at Baselworld 2015, the brand has launched three new Koppel models. Unfortunately, none of them have the hammered silver dials, but they do maintain the same modern, clean lines.
The new models are the Koppel GMT Power Reserve, the Koppel Grande Date Annual Calendar, and the Koppel Mechanical Hand Wound Small Seconds. The Koppel GMT Power Reserve comes in a 41 mm x 12.3 mm 18K gold case. It is powered by a Soprod 9335/al 0-2 with a custom GJ rotor, with a 42-hour power reserve. Functions include hours, minutes, seconds, date, power reserve, and second-time zone. The case back is screwed down with the double-curved sapphire glass. The dial is in white enamel with printed markings. Brown alligator leather strap.
The Koppel Grande Date Annual Calendar comes in a 41 mm by 12.3 mm, 18K gold case. It has a convex crystal and clear caseback and is powered by a Dubois Dépraz 14950/2892 a2 with a custom GJ rotor, with a 42-hour power reserve. Functions include hours, minutes, small seconds, date, and month. The dial is white enamel with printed markings. Brown alligator strap.
The Koppel Mechanical Hand Wound Small Seconds comes in a 38 mm by 7.9 mm steel case. It is powered by an ETA 7001 manually wound caliber. Functions include hours, minutes, and seconds. The dial is white enamel with printed markings. Green or brown alligator strap.
Verdict
The new Koppel timepieces echo the clean and modern design language that the Danish are known for. The movements are all sourced outside the company, although the main selling point is the aesthetic. Personally, I like the look of these timepieces, although, I would like to see more of the hammered silver dials, because that is something, to my knowledge, nobody else is doing. And when selling in any industry, especially the highly saturated watch industry, differentiation is everything. Retail prices range from $2,990 to $16,500.
