Even though Lemania is not a brand that still exists today, maybe it should.
Vintage reseller Shuck The Oyster has a cool-looking 1960s chronograph that comes in what they refer to as a “Piquerez” case. I’ve never heard of this case-shape, but as you can see, it’s an atypical shape, which is more or less a variation of the tounneau-shaped case. An attractive variation, no less, and at 37 mm, quite wearable compared to some of the oversized tounneau-shaped cases we see today from Richard Mille, Hublot, and Franck Muller.
The sporty matte black dial still features nicely patinated, matching, tritium-filled hands and indices, and is accented by nice pops of orange. Even the black perforated leather racing strap is said to be original.
Inside is the famous Lemania caliber 861 chronograph movement (movement IP that’s owned by the Swatch Group and that first made its way into the Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional in 1968), which has been recently serviced and is listed as running at -3/+3 seconds per day, with an amplitude of 300 degrees.
Adding further appeal is that the watch is a prototype. The circa 1960s Lemania Chronograph Prototype 36379 is listed for approximately $5,285.
