Two of the most popular watches on the market today are the MoonSwatch and Speedmaster, both made by the Swatch Group.
These watches have roughly the same dimensions and the same 20 mm lug width. So the fact that the Speedmaster is often considered a “strap monster” also means the MoonSwatch can be called the same thing. After all, the straps that fit the Speedmaster fit the MoonSwatch in the same way.
That said, the quality, appearance, and price of the plethora of strap options vary significantly. Even in the single image above, you see three different options that are all interchangeable yet not all are created or perform equally.
Top left, you see the standard OEM MoonSwatch strap that came out in 2022, which features a velcro closure and a stiff nylon material that results in a strap that does not look or feel great on the wrist. We suspect they created a look they wanted at the lowest possible price.
In 2025, Swatch finally addressed the strap issue and now produces a $45 factory-made alternative to the standard MoonSwatch strap, pictured at the bottom of the image above. This design is far better than the original strap, and now uses a rubber material (better feel and durability), is tapered (which arguably looks better); however, it still maintains a velcro closure, which some may prefer, but it’s atypical compared to pin and buckle or deployant closures seen on most watches across all price points.
Lastly, there’s a premium FKM rubber strap, molded perfectly to the Speedmaster case, shown on the top right of the image above. This particular strap is sold by aftermarket strap maker Perpetual Straps and is also offered by numerous resellers online. This strap rivals Omega’s factory rubber replacement is pliability, fit, and quality, yet depending on where you buy it, these tend to be in the $50-100 price range, whereas the Omega OEM strap is $300 plus, depending on where you go with a pin buckle or deployant.
The FKM Speedmaster strap can fit perfectly on the MoonSwatch, too, so if you don’t want one of the OEM MoonSwatch straps, or if you find the Omega OEM rubber straps to be too expensive, then we can highly recommend a molded FKM strap. The FKM strap not only fits and feels fantastic because it’s molded to integrate right against the edge of either MoonSwatch or Speedmaster, but it also creates a totally different wrist presence.
