Doxa debuted a 100-piece limited edition re-edition military-issued diver watch in collaboration with Watches of Switerzland today.
The Doxa Army Watches of Switzerland Edition is a faithful recreation of the 1969 Doxa Army that was made in a stainless steel case and given a chemical oxidization treatment giving it a matte black finish to prevent glare, which was key for military equipment at the time.
Fast forward to today Biel/Bienne-based Doxa recreated its 1960s black Army dive watch with near-identical aesthetics but instead of stainless steel, the timepiece comes in a contemporary lightweight matte black ceramic case. The Doxa Army measures 42.5 mm x 13.4 mm (44.5 lug-to-lug), with a titanium screw-down crown and screw-in caseback, has a box-type sapphire crystal and a depth rating of 300 meters.
This special limited edition features Doxa’s signature bright orange lacquer paint on all three hands, with a prominent minute hand being the focus for keeping track of dive time. The bezel does not use Doxa’s patent dual indication of dive time in minutes and depth in meters for calculating no-stop decompression dive times. Instead, it uses a more simple countdown bezel, which is the reverse of the more standard count-up bezel on something such as a Rolex Submariner.
According to Doxa, this model’s original sandy beige-colored dial eliminated glare underwater, and the same hue was used for the modern iteration. The same boxy indices and minute/seconds track was also used for this special edition. Really, everything looks about the same.
A COSC-certified chronometer Sellita automatic caliber SW200-1 that beats at 4Hz, has 26 jewels, and a power reserve of 38 hours powers the hours, minutes, center seconds, and date. The rotor is emblazoned with the Doxa logo.
Each watch comes in a package designed specifically for this edition and with the original camouflage pattern used by the Swiss Army at the time the watch was first issued. The box holds two straps, one is made from black rubber (shown), and the other, which is also included is a matching camouflage Nato-style nylon strap.
The DOXA Army (Ref. 785.00.031.20) reissue is available for $4,500 at all Watches of Switzerland retail outlets where Doxa is carried and online at WatchesofSwitzerland.com.
