You probably need another device, in the same way you need another subscription service.
Which is to say: you already have too many gadgets and too many monthly services. Yet, here were are. Tokyo-based Balmuda and Apple-famous designer Jony Ive have created an electronic device that represents Zen, in the form a clock.
The Clock, a square-shaped travel clock, that measures 75 mm in across x 75 mm in length, is machined from lightweight aluminum, and weighs approximately 200 grams. Instead of the physical hands that most clocks and wristwatches have, Ive created a dial that uses light to indicate the precise hour, minute, and second.
Designed to enhance your day, in a peaceful way, The Clock, features three modes: Relax Time plays ambient soundscapes including rainfall and fireplace audio; Focus Time plays white noise for more distraction-free work; and the Alarm builds gradually over three minutes. Furthermore, it connects to the dedicated Balmuda Connect app (compatible with both iOS and Android) for even greater convenience and personalized settings, such as setting the alarm of adjusting the display configuration. A fabric storage bag is included for easy portability.
“We wanted to do more than just display the time; we wanted to make time itself a pleasant experience. This led to the creation of “Light Hour,” a new way of expressing time using light. Every hour, the chime sounds, and the familiar movement of a pendulum is represented by light. The slow movement of the second hand evokes a warm and comforting sense of time passing,” according to Balmuda.
Inspired by the form of traditional pocket watches, The Clock is palm-sized and highly portable. It’s worth noting that like a Tesla, or an Apple Watch, this is a power hungry electrified product, and requires USB-C charging, which is pretty convenient to find considering most new devices utilize the same connection. However, with a 24-hour estimated battery life, this is something that’s probably best left plugged in.
Final Thoughts
Although the battery life is not as inspiring as the promise of peacefulness, the potential is there, and the dial is has an attractive minimalist design that’s easy to read despite having no hands. Time will tell how popular this Ive-designed clock will be, and as it’s life cycle progresses, Balmuda states that “both the device and the app will be regularly updated, adding new features and conveniences. Furthermore, we are preparing tools that will work in conjunction with these devices.”
The Clock is currently available in Japan only, the retail price is approximately $373.
