Russian watch manufacture Raketa debuted a new version of its astronomical-themed Copernicus timepiece today with a shimmering aventurine dial.
The Raketa Copernicus 0307 honors Nicolaus Copernicus, the astronomer who revolutionized 16th-century science by proving that the Earth revolves around the Sun and not the other way round, as previously thought.
The Copernicus 0307 features a stainless steel case that measures 39.5 mm x 15.78 mm (46.88 mm lug-to-lug) and is paired with a tapered Milanese mesh bracelet with a 22 mm lug width. The total weight including the bracelet, is 156 grams. A mixture of brushed and polished surfaces, beveled lug edges, a sloped fixed bezel, and a domed sapphire crystal — elevate the look.
A real aventurine (main dial) and agate (center dial) — representing the starry sky and the sun — further enhance the distinctive design, adding to the celestial theme of the timepiece. There’s an additional astronomical layer with this unique design because the hands show not just the time, but also the position of the Earth relative to the Sun. Planet-shaped hands, Earth being the (minute hand), Jupiter the (hour hand), and both moving around the Sun (agate disc in the center). According to Raketa, “These two planets were chosen because the Earth revolves around the Sun in 1 year, and Jupiter in 12 years, which is the same speed ratio as for the minute and hour hands (taking 1 hour and 12 hours, respectively, to revolve around the dial).”
The back of the watch, which has a screw-in stainless steel and mineral crystal back, reveals in-house-made caliber 2615. Entirely produced by the Raketa Watch Factory in Saint-Petersburg, the 2.5Hz automatic movement features 24 jewels, bi-directional winding, a gold-plated rotor with Neva waves print, and a 40-hour power reserve. Raketa tests the movement in 4 positions and adjusts to a rate of -10/+20 before it leaves the factory.
The Raketa “Copernicus” 0307 is water-resistant to a depth of 50 meters. It has a unique red ruby stone in the crown, visible through a cut-out in the shape of an anchor fork, which matches the hue of red used for the printed Raketa logo on the dial.
The Copernicus 0307 is marketed as unisex, and at 39.5 mm in diameter, with a short lug-to-lug under 47 mm, it should fit a variety of wrist sizes well.
Raketa watches are delivered worldwide free of charge by DHL directly up to the front door. The retail price for the Copernicus 0307 with the Milanese mesh bracelet is $2,450.
