Seiko recently announced an interesting GMT Diver’s watch that’s worth a look.

The Prospex 1968 Heritage Divers GMT (Ref. SPB519J1) features a 42 mm x 13.3 mm (48.6 mm lug-to-lug) stainless steel case with a 20 mm lug width, and a total weight of 188 grams. A unidirectional bezel with a 0-60 count-up diver’s insert in scratch-resistant blue ceramic material contrasts with the highly legible and stylish white dial, for an attractive look that varies from standard black dial divers, ideal for warm weather and aquatic activities.

On the dial, there are large luminous indices, large hour and minute hands, a sweeping center seconds hand, a large reg tipped 24-hour GMT hand that shows a second time zone in conjunction with the 24-hour flange.

A tiny date display, angled at 45 degrees, blends into the dial at 4:30, which is useful for those who like a date display; however, it takes away from the otherwise clean aesthetics and adds a function that some may prefer to live without.

At 4 o’clock, on the right case flank in the crown, which allows you to set the time (hours, minutes, seconds), the GMT hand, and date. You can stop the seconds and manually wind Seiko’s premium caliber 65R4 automatic movement; however, don’t expect high precision from the factory as it comes adjusted to -15/+25 seconds per day. This is a rather disappointing level of accuracy considering its positioning within the “Prospex” collection and the high price tag.

A new three-fold clasp with secure lock & push button release, and push button new slide adjustment extension is a nice touch. According to Seiko, “The new clasp can be adjusted in six steps, each measuring about 2.5mm, for a total range of approximately 15mm. This marks the first time that this clasp has been adopted in a non-limited-edition model. It allows for a comfortable fit at all times, accommodating changes in wrist size during diving and daily life.”

With this so-called “Baby Marine Master GMT” — in addition to the new bracelet — you get a sapphire crystal, screw-in caseback, screw down crown, 300 meters of water-resistance, a ceramic bezel, 3 days of power reserve (72 hours), and the GMT functionality. However, for $1,700, it would be nice if Seiko adjusted the watch to a higher level of precision before sending it out to consumers.

The Prospex 1968 Heritage Divers GMT (Ref. SPB519J1) will be available starting June 2025.
