Panerai Pocket Watch 3 Days

February 13, 2014

Last month at SIHH, Panerai released a pair of luscious gold Radiomir pocket watches powered by a new version of in-house caliber P.3001. Like the P.3001, caliber P.3001/10 was developed and produced at the Officine Panerai manufacture in Neuchâtel. It is also hand-wound and has the same 3-day power reserve with a power reserve indicator on the movement side and a balance cadence of 3Hz.

What is new, are the skeletonized bridges and power barrels, which include hand chamfered polished angles. The skeletonizing shows off the exquisite wheel work gilded engraving and it also reveals the operation of the unwinding and winding of the barrel springs. All this is visible by opening the hinged back cover. The cover is solid gold and is polished to a mirror finish, with no markings, making it perfect for a personalized engraving.

The dial of the watch is classic Panerai, with numerals marking 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock, and batons marking the other hours. Best of all, though, the new pocket watches features a Panerai sandwich dial. A sandwich dial consists of two superimposed discs that enclose a layer of ecru Superluminova, which is visible through cut-outs in the upper disc that correspond to the hour markers. The construction of the dial not only looks unique and adds depth, it also ensures excellent legibility, in all lighting conditions.

The 18K solid gold case measures 50 mm in diameter. A solid gold nautical inspired chain, measuring 40 cm (15.75 inches) connects to the top of the pocket watch (above the crown) and can be secured using the hooks on the end. The watch is water-resistant to 50 meters. It comes with a mahogany box specially made for the watch as well as a hanging stand that allows the watch to be displayed as a table clock when not being worn.

The Panerai Pocket Watch 3 Days Oro Rosso PAM00447 (in red gold) costs $71,800 and features a brown sun-brushed dial; the Oro Bianco PAM00529 (in white gold) model costs $75,700 and has an anthracite sun-brushed dial. Both are available in 50 piece special editions.
