TAG Heuer and lifestyle clothing retailer Kith partnered to recreate the 1980s Formula 1 Series 1 watch.

Released in 1986, the TAG Heuer Formula 1 has been remade with faithful aesthetics and an upgraded modern construction that’s certainly more durable than the original.

Announced today and soon to be available the TAG Heuer x Kith Formula 1 is being offered in the same shape and size as the original — a 35 mm diameter stainless steel case (not likely 316L steel) — with an arnite bezel (thermoplastic polyester).

A plastic crystal protected the original Formula 1 dials and that’s been upgraded to a premium sapphire crystal. The straps have also been upgraded from plastic to either a rubber strap or a steel bracelet.

On the dial, the TAG Heuer logo has been replaced with the “KITH” where “TAG” usually goes, and then “HEUER” in its normal position underneath that, with the shield emblem. Kith’s “Just Us” saying is stamped on the dial at 6 o’clock.

Driving the hours, minutes, center seconds, and date, is a Swiss-made quartz movement.

The initial availability begins May 3rd — to celebrate the F1 Grand Prix — which starts this weekend, followed by the global launch on May 6th.

Considering the construction, perceived production costs, original prices, and also other similar offerings such as the MoonSwatch ($270+), Kith limited edition releases by G-Shock ($380) and ($400), or the Aikon Tide ($700+) — it makes you wonder how TAG Heuer came up with such a lofty price ($1500), even with the Kith association.
