Originally unveiled at Baselworld 2017, Czapek’s fascinating guilloché richochet patterned dial has returned for 2020 — in a slightly new form.

Although subtle the new Quai des Bergues Aurora Borealis and Blue Aurora feature guilloche-work dials that are strikingly similar to the abovementioned dial — yet visually distinguished by even more irregular lines.

The so-called “crazy” dials are fabricated by one of Czapek’s partners, Metalem, which is a Swiss atelier of handmade engine-turned dials. Like previously, two focal points form at the subdials, which represent small seconds and power reserve indication, and the intersecting lines create a mesmermizing “wave interference” effect on the dial.

The Quai des Bergues Aurora Borealis and Blue Aurora are available in a 42.5 mm diameter XO stainless steel case. The handmade bombé (curved) shaped guilloché “Java” dial is crafted from what Czapek refers to as a “secret allow” made of gold, silver, palladium, and platinum.

At 12 an Arabic numeral has been applied by hand, while the remaining hours markers are a mixture or hand applied batons or transferred indices. The hour and minute hands feature Czapek’s signature large arrow-tipped skeleton shape. The small seconds subdial has a javelin-shaped hand whereas the dual day/day subdial between 3 and 6 o’clock has a unique dual javelin-shaped hand. The latter of which allows the day and date to be indicated simultaneously — with only one hand.

Both versions are equipped by Czapek SXH1 proprietary caliber with two barrel springs delivering a 7-days power reserve (168-hours), developed in collaboration with Chronode. Hand finishing of the manually wound movement includes double open ratchets, sandblasted bridges, blued screws, and anglage.

The two new models are 100% Swiss made and limited to 10 numbered pieces each. According to Czapek, the Blue Aurora number 1/10 piece has already been acquired by a watch collector.
