Shaped like an observatory — the mechanics are exposed from all sides — the Astronomia makes a statement on your wrist.
First introduced in 2014, the Jacob & Co. Astronomia Tourbillon is an extraordinary timepiece that consists of a barely wrist-sized three-dimensional mechanical model of a planetary system in constant motion.
This limited edition timepiece is offered in black ceramic, black gold, rose gold, or white gold, and features a massive 50 mm x 26 mm case, with an expansive domed sapphire that covers the case edge to edge and with sapphire crystal panels on the sides — offering unobstructed views.
Protruding from the aventurine glass back dial a vertical platform with four arms that revolves on its own axis in 20 minutes, thanks to a patented differential gears system. Its constant motion powers all the movement’s functions and indications. The base dial is made of titanium and aventurine. The watch is water-resistant to 30 meters. Winding and Time-Setting via lift-out rotating bows on the caseback.
Caliber JCAM10 is a three-dimensional movement with a central, vertical axis. It carries four satellites that rotate on their individual axis — and around the central axis.
At the end of one satellite arm hangs a double-axis Tourbillon. It’s held inside an openworked carriage. It revolves on two axes, one in 60 seconds, the other in 5 minutes. Since it travels along with the central platform, this adds a third axis, with a 20-minute rotation period. With a single attachment point, this is a flying tourbillon.
The planet chosen to represent the high jewelry part of Jacob & Co.’s identity is the Moon and is made from a 1-carat purple diamond. Carved from a large rough of extremely high quality, it receives the exclusive, spherical, 288-facet, Jacob-cut. This moon spins on its own axis in 30 seconds.
A spinning Earth globe crafted out of magnesium for lightness, the Earth is hand-lacquered in red (it spins on its own axis every 30 seconds).
At the end of another satellite arm lies the Oribital hour and minute dial. The platform rotation would normally shift the numbers and make their reading impossible. Jacob & Co. has fitted the dial with a patented differential system. It spins in the opposite direction of the platform, at the same speed. As a result, it remains constantly upright and readable.
Creating a mechanically functional miniature solar system that’s wrist-sized is an incredible feat. The 3Hz, hand-wound, 42-jewel, 365-component, 60-hour power reserve exclusive to Jacob caliber JCAM10 is one of the most advanced and complex movements in the Jacob & Co. catalog.
