Chopard’s chiming watch utilizes ten technical patents, five or which were developed for this timepiece.

The L.U.C Grand Strike features multiple chiming complications, including a grande sonnerie (automatically chimes the hours and quarters of the hour), petite sonneries (automatically strikes the hours and quarters on the hour), and a minute repeater (chimes the time on demand via a pusher integrated into the crown).

Interestingly, to make the chiming sound, traditional metal hammers strike proprietary sapphire crystal gongs, which are machined from a single block of sapphire crystal, integrated with the watch glass, to produce a remarkably loud and clear sound with a distinct C#-F natural chord.

In addition to the audible chiming complications, the L.U.C. Grand Strike has traditional Dauphine-shaped central hour and minute hands, and a 60-second tourbillon with a stop-seconds function, equipped with a dedicated small seconds hand, ensuring that you can set the watch precisely. The movement has been COSC-certified, meaning it’s been regulated to chronometer specifications of -4/+6 seconds per day or better.

A dial-less display (openworked) showcases the 686-component, 67-jewel manually wound caliber L.U.C 08.03-L, which beats at 4Hz and is housed inside a 43 mm diameter x 14.08 mm in thickness 18K ethical white gold case, that’s compact relative to the amount of horological innovation and complication inside.

A sliding selector switch, located on the case flank between 2 and 3 o’clock, allows the wearer to choose between Grande Sonnerie (G), Petite Sonnerie (P), and Silence (S) modes.

The watch has two separate power barrels: one for timekeeping (approx. 70 hours) and one for the striking mechanism (at least 12 hours in grande sonnerie mode).

Finishing and decorating of the components, including the Geneva-striped German silver mainplate and bridges, are executed to high quality standards and bear the Genève Seal.

Final Thoughts

Priced at CHF 780,000, or nearly a million dollars at today’s exchange rates ($969,940), only two to three of the L.U.C. Grand Strike timepieces (Ref. 161994-1001) can be made per year.

From the exceptional acoustic clarity to the intricate hand finishing to the extraordinary complications and unique sapphire gongs — all on display through the openworked dial — Chopard has truly delivered a horological marvel in the L.U.C. Grand Strike.
