Schaffhausen-based International Watch Company expanded its 40 mm Genta-derived Ingenieur collection in 2025 by adding smaller (35 mm) and larger (42 mm) case sizes.
The all-new Ingenieur Automatic 42 Ceramic model features a 100-meter water-resistant case that measures 42 mm x 11.5 mm and weighs a relatively lightweight 131 grams.
The case band, bezel, caseback, crown, and crown guards are made of hard, scratch-resistant (yet brittle) black zirconium oxide (ceramic). According to IWC, “A thin inner titanium ring accommodates the functional screws from the bezel and the case back ring holds the movement, and ensures a high water resistance of 10 bar.”
Fitting with a tapered, integrated black ceramic bracelet, the middle links connect to the case and provide the wearer with a unique, comfortable, lightweight wearing experience compared to stainless steel, titanium, or precious metal.
The black dial is adorned with a checkered “Grid” pattern and overall looks good, however, considering the price range, the logo at 12 would look better if it had more depth and was of the hand-applied, not the stamped variety. At least, the indices appear to be hand-applied.
IWC used satin-finishing, sandblasting, and polishing on the case, which is a complex, costly, time-consuming process that can only be executed using diamond-tipped tools.
Inside is IWC’s caliber 82110 4Hz automatic movement, which uses a Pellaton winding system, consists of 22 jewels, 181 total components, with a 60-hour power reserve, with an industrial look to the architecture of the components, that’s visible through what appears to be a slightly smoked sapphire caseback.
Like the IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40 that we selected as one of our Four Best Watches of 2024 (a list that nobody paid us to enter, and that no retailer or brand had any say in), the new IWC Ingenieur Automatic 42 Ceramic looks like yet another attractive alternative — albeit an expensive one — to some of the best angular integrated bracelet watches on the market.
The IWC Ingenieur Automatic 42 Ceramic (Ref. IW338903) has a depth rating of 100 meters retail price is $19,500.
