Kari Voutilainen makes some of the best guilloché dials in the world.

With three different manually-applied guilloché patterns adorning the blue dial, the Voutilainen 28CG Platinum is no exception.

Voutilainen’s signature open-tipped gold and blued steel hour and minute hands, open-counterweighted small seconds hand, and white gold applied Arabic numerals indicate hours, minutes, and seconds, luxuriously.

Delivered in a 950 platinum case that measures 37 mm in diameter, with a concave fixed bezel, and more of Voutilainen’s renowned hand guilloché-work decorating the case flanks. Every angle, every facet, is crafted with artisanal — not machine-made — perfection.

Even the large-diameter, flat, ridged 950 platinum crown is rendered with an intricate engraving that instantly communicates: this timepiece is not just a mechanical timekeeper, but also an artistic masterpiece.

Flip the Voutilainen 28CG Platinum over, and you’ll see what they call it: Haute horology. This is no outsourced workhorse; it’s one of the most aesthetically pleasing hand-finished three-hand movements on the market. The 30 mm manually wound in-house Voutilainen caliber is precisely tailored to fit the case, with no gaps. The mainplate and bridges are manufactured from luscious German silver and are expertly hand-decorated. From striping to perlage to anglage to polishing of every screw head and jewel sink, and snailed mainspring barrel, this three-hand movement is a testament to Swiss excellence.

Beating at 3Hz, the two escapement wheels with direct impulse (which require less energy than a Swiss lever escapement), a gorgeous hand-polished conical traversing balance bridge, supporting the massive 13.5 mm balance wheel, with a free sprung design that includes rose gold timing weights, this 21-jewel, 159-component, 65-hour power reserve timekeeper, is as complicated as it is simple.

The exterior of the balance spring features a typical Phillips overcoil, and the interior uses a Grossmann curve, so as you watch the balance wheel to and fro, you know it’s not just made to mesmerize, but also to indicate the time with the utmost precision.

It’s a beautiful expression of timekeeping, from every angle, through and through.
