Located on the Champ de Mars the Eiffel Tower is synonymous with France and a must-see stop on a trip to Paris.
Named after engineer Gustave Eiffel whose company designed and built the Eiffel Tower in 1889. Made of a wrought iron lattice that spans 1,063 feet into the air the Eiffel Tower is one of the most recognizable and visited monuments in the world.
The Eiffel Tower has a restaurant, multiple observation decks, and an apartment at the top but what should intrigue a watch enthusiast, is the 72 names (18 on each side) that are emblazoned around the base which consists of scientists, engineers, chemists, astronomers, physicists, mathematicians, and a watchmaker.
Abraham-Louis Breguet is considered one of the greatest watchmakers that has ever lived. His scientific and watchmaking contributions included the inventing the pare-chute anti-shock device (1790), inventing the Breguet spiral (1795), patenting the tourbillon escapement (1801) — and many more — as well as making watches for French royalty. For his great work, he was selected along with 71 other important names to be permanently emblazoned on the Eiffel Tower.
