The 2019 New York Auto Show took place last month, at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center on Manhattan’s West Side and I prepared a photo report featuring some of my favorite cars.
As consumer product shows continue to go through a major transformation period – due to the increased digitization of product marketing – it’s interesting to note this show was particularly vibrant and bustling with people.
BMW was noticeably absent, and while it’s totally understandable that they’re not focused on big car shows anymore, I did still miss them. When thinking about watch industry parallels, Baselworld without Omega and SIHH sans Audemars Piguet, immediately came to mind. When you take away an anchor brand, whether it’s watches or cars, it’s impossible not to leave a void.

On the final Sunday of the show, I spent about three hours creating the photos for this report, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Two of the cars I photographed – the 2019 Nissan GT-R 50th Anniversary and Porsche 911 Speedster – have official timepiece tie-ins.
The coordinating official Grand Seiko Nissan GT-R 50th Anniversary watch (pictured above) is currently on display at Watches of Switzerland, located at Hudson Yards (across the street from the convention center). There are also a number of other car-related watches, as well as a limited edition L’Epée Time Fast D8 1839 mechanical car clock on display.
