TAG Heuer launched the original Formula 1 watch collection in 1986, and today they’ve updated the line with three new Swiss-made quartz-powered chronographs.
The 2022 TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph is delivered in a sporty, brushed stainless steel case measuring 43 mm x 12.4 mm. A fixed black PVD-treated stainless steel bezel with raised tachymeter markings sits atop the watch.
There’s a choice of three brushed sunburst dials — with hand applied indices — in either bright green, yellow, or red. The hue of each dial is rather bold and vibrant, which gives off a playful vibe. Although, with inflation presumably affecting the cost of production, the prices are not as playful as they once were. Bearing in mind the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph collection is powered by an outsourced Swiss quartz chronograph caliber, the near two thousand dollar price is quite steep considering what’s available with an automatic for that price. Nevertheless, TAG Heuer offers higher quality than brands such as Seiko or Oris, so you can be confident that you’ve purchased a product that will have very few problems.
A flat sapphire crystal protects the dial, and if you turn the watch over there’s a screw-in stainless steel caseback that’s been engraved with TAG Heuer’s emblem and a Formula 1 racing motif. The screw-down crown, and chronograph pushers, are made of stainless steel, with a black PVD coating, like the bezel. The watch is depth rated to 200 meters.
Each watch is fitted with a premium rubber strap that’s color matched to the dial and secured with stainless steel hardware. The lug width is an unusual 21.5 mm meaning that purchasing aftermarket straps that fit the case well will be difficult.
The Swiss-made quartz chronograph movement powers the hours, minutes, seconds (at 3 o’clock), and date, and features a chronograph with seconds, 1/10th of a second, and a 30-minute counter.
The 2022 TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph (Ref. CAZ101AP.FT8056 – green, CAZ101AN.FT8055 – red, CAZ101AM.FT8054 – yellow) retails for $1,850.
