This is independent watchmaker Christiaan van der Klaauw Astronomical Watches’ first in-house movement, and like the watches, it’s not your typical Swiss caliber.
Development started in 2017, according to the manufacture, meaning it took 7 years to create, which even for a watch movement being built from scratch, is a long lead time.
The result is the caliber CKM-01 which beats at 3Hz, has a uni-directional automatic winding rotor, 30 jewels, and 60 hours of power reserve when fully wound. All pretty standard specifications, until you get to the finishing of the components.
At the heart of this stunning timepiece lies a variable-inertia balance wheel, meticulously designed to enhance accuracy and dependability. The new movement features a free-sprung balance spring, with Star-shaped bridges meticulously circular finished by hand. The rest of the movement is adorned in a frosted star pattern with rhodium plating, complemented by perlage with rhodium plating on the mainplate. The rotor, crafted in the shape of the CVDK logo, is skeletonized and plated in rose gold a testament to both form and function.
This movement will act as a base for all the timepieces within the collection.
