Laurent Ferrier released an interesting new watch yesterday that features a lightweight titanium case and a distinctive limited edition dial.

The Classic Origin Green — which is milled from grade 5 titanium — is both lighter and less expensive than precious metal Laurent Ferrier timepieces, not to mention, hypoallergenic. Mainly, though, it offers a subtle change of pace from gold and platinum. All while retaining the desirable 40 mm x 10.70 mm circular case, fixed bezel, and ball-shaped crown — that are all easily recognizable as a Laurent Ferrier.

Starting with a dark green gradient dial that fades from a light hue in the center to darker on the edges, with a printed crosshair motif on top of that — the dial distinguishes this watch but in a subtle way. The Classic Origin is not quite as sporty as the Grand Sport Tourbillon yet its design does appeal more to the casual senses than many of the overly formal Laurent Ferrier models. The yellow printed military time numerals — within the closed slate-gray printed chapter ring around the perimeter — heighten the aesthetic, especially against the gorgeous green opaline dial.

Completing the look are mirror-polished 18K white gold Assegai-shaped hour and minute hands, with slate gray, printed hour markers (except at 12, 3, and 9) where dagger-shaped polished white gold indices have been applied (including dual indices at 12). A recessed small seconds subdial sits at 6 o’clock, with a printed yellow seconds track, and baton-shaped hand in matching white gold.

On the backside, a clear caseback allows a peerless view of the hand-wound caliber LF 116.01, unobstructed by a rotor. And what a view it is. The bridges which dominate the back, have been micro-blasted to a frosted finish that’s been treated to a black rhodium-plating resulting in a subtle yet luxurious matte gray surface appearance, juxtaposed by hand beveled (including the complex interior angles) and hand-polished edges. Mirro-polished screw head, gilded engravings, and screw-chatons further enhance the elegance of the simplistic 3Hz, 150 component caliber. When winding the watch — thanks to the company’s long-blade ratchet system — Laurent Ferrier says the process, “offers a very pleasant feeling when the watch is wound as well as an inimitable sound.” The power reserve maxes out at an impressive 80-hours. Timing adjustments can be made via screws on the free-sprung balance wheel, although coming out of the manufacture in Geneva, each 21-jewel Haute horology movement has been adjusted in 6 positions, to chronometer specifications, or better.

Each of the Classic Origin Green limited edition pieces is individually numbered “XX/30” and is paired with a honey brown Timberland leather (a name which the brand presumably is synonymous with “nubuck” leather), with Alcantara lining and a grade 5 titanium pin buckle. (Ref. LCF036.TI.VG)

Retail is approximately $32,000. Learn more about Laurent Ferrier.
