Grand Seiko and Hodinkee unveiled a limited edition version of the company’s automatic GMT today.

Based on the same SBGM case, dial, and movement — that we reviewed in 2016 — Grand Seiko also made a similar limited edition GMT for their retail partner Watches of Switzerland earlier this year. Like the existing models, the new Grand Seiko Automatic GMT SBGM239 Limited Edition for Hodinkee comes in a 39.5 mm x 14 mm steel case, with Zaratsu polishing, faceted applied indices, and features the Grand Seiko’s distinctive faceted Dauphine-shaped blade-style hands.

As with the case and dial, the existing caliber 9S66 automatic in-house movement powers the hours, minutes, seconds, date display, and 24-hour second-time zone hand. The movement has hand winding, a stop-seconds function, runs at 4Hz, and has 225 components, 35 jewels, and a 72-hour power reserve. The bridges and rotor have a machine applied striped decoration.

“The Grand Seiko Automatic GMT SBGM239 Limited Edition for Hodinkee features an attractive blue dial that was partially inspired by the daily transition from day to night. This shade of blue is rich and refined, matte in tone which works harmoniously with the light gray accents and diamond-cut multifaceted hands and hour markers. We affectionately nicknamed it “Yūgure” (Japanese for dusk or twilight),” according to Hodinkee.
