A rare Rolex Daytona Paul Newman Ref. 6263 “Oyster Sotto” 1969, photographed at the Phillips’ New York auction house in October 2019. Interestingly, this was pulled from the auction, and it was likely because the entire crown and stem could be pulled entirely out of the case, meaning it needed a presumably lengthy vintage watch service, at minimum. That was a good move from Phillips not to sell a knowingly broken timepiece.

In another sale, where the watch was not as described, Phillips (not Omega) sold the once-believed record-breaking Speedmaster (in 2021), later called into question in 2023 by Perezscope. That led us to write an article about the misrepresented Speedmaster. Phillips has yet to communicate why they sold a watch with a chemically modified dial as “tropical.”
