Under the direction of Guy Bove, the head of design at TAG Heuer, the Carrera received a subtle redesign for 2020 that includes a newly styled dial, crown, and pushers.
The 2020 TAG Heuer Carrera Sport Chronograph 44 mm represents an evolutionary change in the lineup, as the watch retains its modern Carrera aesthetic — and now it’s more refined.
For the dial, Bove reduced the size of the faceted, applied, rhodium-plated luminescent baton-shaped indices, and ever so slightly redesigned the white printed outer ring. The dial finishes are also elevated now, with the circular-grained finish, for instance. The baton-shaped rhodium-plated, luminescent hour and minute hands have been reduced in width, but have the same look overall as previous iterations. Azurage patterned subdials sit at 3, 6, and 9, with a small date aperture within the subdial at 6.
Like with the Carrera Chronograph GMT that debuted launched in 2018, and the throwback Carrera Silver Limited Edition that dropped this year — the in-house Heuer 02 automatic chronograph movement drives the time, chronograph, and date functions. The modern 4Hz caliber uses a premium column-wheel and clutch configuration for the chronograph and has a power reserve of 80-hours.
Apart from the minor visual changes, the case is the same as before and measures 44 mm in diameter, with the exception of a new crown with inlaid logo and chronograph push-pieces and a new monoblock ceramic bezel that’s been color-matched to the dial on three of the four models. The green dial variant comes with a stainless steel bezel.
The dial is protected by a flat sapphire crystal with a beveled edge that sits just above the plane of the bezel. A screwed sapphire caseback offers a view of the Heuer 02’s vertical Geneva stripes on the bridges and skeletonized black plated striped oscillating weight. Water-resistance is 100 meters.
For the three standard stainless steel 2020 TAG Heuer Carrera Sport Chronographs with a blue, green, or black dial, the retail price is $5,750. The reference that features red gold hands, crown, pushers, and gold highlights, retails for $6,550.
